US Model 1866 Rifle (Allen Conversion)
Original US Model 1866 rifle, known as the ALLIN conversion, this is a Type II 50 caliber breech loader commonly referred to as the “trap door.” Designed by Erskine S. Allin, this piece was produced in 1866, with approximately 25,000 units altered at the Springfield Armory using the Model 1863 percussion musket.
The rifle features a 40-inch Civil War Barrel (actual length to face of breach 36 5/8”) It has a larger diameter bore fitted with a liner tube for the 50 caliber. The 50 caliber barrel sleeve was braised in place, and the breech was modified to accept the trap door assembly, which also includes an ejector, three barrel bands with band springs, the Model 1866 also includes improvements from the previous Model 1865, such as a lengthened bolt, a firing pin spring, and a external extracting system.
Marked with “1866” and an American eagle, this rifle retains many features of the original Civil War muskets, often marked with 1863 or 1864 Springfield markings. The finish showcases the original black and case-hardened colors from the quenching process, with the lock and hammer exhibiting a bright hue from hardening.
This Allen conversion saw limited exposure during the Civil War and primarily impacted the Indian Wars era. It is chambered for 70 grains of black powder, leading to the description of the .50-70 cartridge
The historical significance of this rework marks the transition from muzzle-loading small arms to the advent of the brass breech-loading cartridge, which continues to be used today. This remarkable piece is adorned with an eagle motif alongside the “US” marking and “Springfield 1864,” representing a significant era in American firearms history. Don’t miss the opportunity to own this unique piece of heritage!
