Model 1873 US “Trap Door” Springfield rifle, a classic in American firearms history. Chambered in .45 caliber, or .45-70 government, this breech-loading rifle is marked with “US Springfield” and features the iconic eagle motif on the lock. The breech block is marked with “Model 1873” and bears the serial number 257207, which has been researched through the Springfield Historical Arms Museum. Documentation will be provided detailing its historical significance.

This rifle is one of approximately 73,000 made by the Springfield Armory between 1870 and 1873. It features a barrel length of 32 5/8 inches, secured by two barrel bands. The front sight also serves as a stud for a typical Barnett cleaning rod, and there is a slotted head for cleaning tools. Notably, it bears a faint outline of the “E.S. Allin” marking on the bottom of the stock. As an earlier model, it includes a checkered hammer and exhibits a black finish, achieved through oil quenching between 1873 and 1877.

The barrel showcases the eagle and “VP” stamp on the left side. The Model 1873 was the first trap door rifle chambered in .45-70, establishing the standardized cartridge that also applied to the .45 Colt for handguns in 1873. This specific rifle is equipped with a graduated ladder sight for 400 yards and an adjustable leaf sight extending out to approximately 1200 yards.

This remarkable piece of firearm history is an excellent addition for collectors and enthusiasts alike. Don’t miss the opportunity to own this significant example of American military heritage!
